The South Boathouse is quite a marvel of engineering. The three doors at the far end are fitted with sea doors that when lowered prevent any wave action in the slips. During gala events the slips were covered and bands would play near the open windows on the right. A steel beam supported from above runs the entire length of the boathouse and chain falls were used to remove boats and store them on the dry floor for winter. A model sailboat can be seen on the left. Model boats were a favorite hobby at the time and a lot of work was put into them. The tongue and groove plank ceiling lends an air of opulence to this water garage.
